RACHELALEX
Rachel and Alex are the ultimate sister Sydneysider fashion designer duo. Their self named brand RACHELALEX is a high-end contemporary style which reflects within their collections. Having an array of beautiful digital prints and fine silk get-ups suited for all occasions.
So far they've not only made their fashion imprint in the land of Aus, but are internationally recognised in New York, Paris and Los Angeles.
These two inspiring passionate Aussie babes share their story so far and their experience in the fashion world, along with explaining process creating unique in house designs.
You've just launched your independent label and you're both Sydney based, what made you want to create RACHELALEX?
Since we can remember, we have both always wanted to collaborate together on a creative venture. The initial idea of the RACHELALEX brand came about after Alex's graduating collection was selected to show at Who's Next Pret-A-Porter Paris Trade Show and we met with international buyers, press and manufactures.
The conversations that followed from people we met whilst in London and Paris really helped us solidify our idea and plan the RACHELALEX brand.
How long does it take to get your idea from pen and paper to runway ready?
The overall timeframe from initial brainstorming and development, to the final sample product is roughly 8 to 12 week cycle.
Do you create all your digital prints? If so what was the process and inspiration behind your current collection?
Yes, all digital prints are designed in-house by Rachel. When formulating imagery for our collections, we use our own photography and illustrations, which we both produce and then Rachel creates digitised collages of the two mediums. Our current collection "Distinct Ambiguity" evokes an interpretation of visual interplay, fusing elements of paper weaving, folded pleats and liquefied surfaced. The collection reflects the idea of calmness in motion, which is apparent in its array of bold visual textures and soft fabrications. The dynamic contouring of each exclusive prints forms a simple, effortless charm that compliments each garment.
Where do you both gain inspiration from?
Colour is a major aspect to our work and we find ourselves contentiously attracted to the natural, vivid tones of the Australian landscape. Living on Sydney's foreshore, it's hard not to miss the enchanting deep blue and green tones of the harbour and surrounding national parks.
Most biggest achievement so far with your brand?
MBFW2014 and having the opportunity to show overseas.
Advice to fashion students out there wanting to create their own label and get their foot in the door ?
Make sure you are prepared for never-ending challenges and are well equipped to overcome unexpected obstacles. Also, allow yourself plenty of time to plan, develop and execute your collections, as having your own small business is more than a full-time job.
