Pamela's interest in fashion has always been undeniable, from having her mum as a creative inspiration. From a young age Pamela's mother would create and make her clothes from scratch. Pamela caught onto this creative flair and knowledge at the age of eight!
Coming from a media background with Bachelor of Communications with a Major in Public Relations, and having worked for Network Ten for almost 10 years in television production. Although having no formal fashion qualifications, this didn't stop Pamela from bringing her ideas to life!
Red Kitty Creations is such a fabulous idea for us girls who want to change up our boring old heels! Tell us how did your brand Red Kitty Creations come about?
I had the idea for shoe accessories at around 15 years of age when I was playing dress ups in my room (as you do as a teen) and flicking through Vogue magazines. I remember wishing I could afford the amazing beautiful designs but at around $700+ a pair there was no way I could afford that as a teen so i designed an accessory that could fit over my existing heels that gave them that 'high fashion' glossy magazine look I so wanted. I thought it was just a matter of time until someone 'discovered' this amazing idea and manufactured them.... but they never did, so i thought why don't I do it?!
I also found that if I did buy a heel with a unique design, I would 'get over them' after just a few months, something you don't want to admit to yourself after having splurged so much money on an elaborate expensive design! My shoe accessories are easy to put on, and give you the option of wearing a 'statement' heel or leaving them plain. Each outfit is different so it gives you more options basically as they can be 10 different shoes in one - for a small fraction of the cost. They are made from beautiful leather too so you don't compromise on quality.
Perfect for travelling too as they save having to pack so many pairs of heels. Just pack your 'go to' comfy heels and change them up as you like! yay!
What is your inspiration behind each shoe accessory?
It sounds cliche but I honestly get inspiration from everywhere! I created 'paris heels' after seeing a belt that I liked in a fashion magazine with a similar design. I am really loving all the fringed suede out at the moment (thanks Burberry for starting that all!) and I am actually releasing a suede fringe that ties around the ankles in the coming weeks which can be worn over high heeled sandals, pumps or boots!
What is the process of creating them? From your butterflies to wings!
Each design is different, sometimes I can picture the design and I start by simply drawing them, then using basic materials I do a mock up so check they look and work the way I want them to, playing with different colours etc.
With my wings for example I wore them everywhere to test their durability and also wore them with all different heel sizes from super high thin stiletto to low thick boot heels just to make sure they would fit most heel thickness and heights. I really wanted it to be a one size fits all for simplicity and so that anyone could wear them. Once I was happy with them, I would make it myself if I could, or send them off the manufacturer who would send me back a sample then I would test them again and make any necessary changes until they were just right.
Also did you find any trial and errors during this process?
Yes, don't rush it!!! You get super excited about the product and are so keen to get the ball rollin, but don't compromise on your ideals. It takes time to get it just right, so just do not rush it. I have a few designs that were costly to make but because I rushed, they were not as I wanted and thus never made it into production. Also when working with others, know what you want and don't be afraid to push for what you want, after all, its YOUR design so don't let anyone hijack it and change it. In the end, you are the one that has to be happy with it. So in a nutshell, be patient, stand your ground and be pushy if you have to. haha :)
What is your favourite part about being a designer?
Oh definitely seeing your ideas come to life!! You picture how it is going to look and then when you have the final product in your hand and it looks great, and it works, and you see people wearing it AAAHH! That HAS to be the best feeling ever!
…… and the not so favourite?
Juggling my time. All I want to do is create and design which is the fun part, but I also have to commit time to other areas of the business that may not necessarily be my favourite. i.e... taxes anyone?
What's next for your brand?
I have a few different shoe accessory designs in the making, some for flats. But I am also looking at making 'other' unique accessories (the same concept as the my shoe jewellery but for clothes). So if you wanted to tastefully embellish an item of clothing, say shoulders of a plain jumper or sleeve cuffs, or a collar, even around the sides of your waist on a loose dress perhaps, these accessories easily come on and off as you please. They are beautiful, modern and don't damage your clothes at all. - it doesn't use pins and I am not making belts either! haha You'll have to wait and see, very exciting. I'm currently testing the mock ups over the coming weeks so very exciting things to come.
Advice to students who want to get into the accessory business?
Just go for it! Don't worry if you have no academic qualifications (although absolutely this helps! If I had this I truly believe I would be lightyears ahead ALREADY) or even if you are not in the industry. One of the women I really look up to is Lisa Messenger who started a magazine without ANY experience in the printing industry, in the middle of a financial crisis and she is killing it! Just pick up a pen and start drawing, start cutting, start creating... the hardest part really is just getting STARTED!
