Your about to complete your Diploma of Applied Fashion Design and Technology, how has your fashion design studying journey been?
Tell us the up’s and downs, the things you've learnt most since your time at Kangan?
The last 3 years of studying fashion design have been so rewarding. The intimate class sizes and support and guidance I gained from my teachers made for a really nurturing learning environment. Previous to study in fashion design I really didn’t have much experience with sewing or pattern making, so being taught all of the technical elements behind putting a garment together is a skill that I am so grateful to now have.
Have you completed any internships since studying? If so what did you learn?
In my second year of study I completed an internship at the boutique textile company Frankie and Swiss. That was such a wonderful experience. Working with such lovely people and getting to see my illustrations digitally printed and made into products was so exciting.
What do you aspire/ hopes/ dreams to eventually be in the fashion game?
I’m really not 100% sure at this point. I really love illustrating and playing with textiles so possibly something in fashion illustration or textile design.
Have you always loved to paint?
You have a real talent to paint, your recent collection projected that. I'm sure all would agree that during the runway it was breath taking! Tell us the process about how you created our collection?
I have always loved drawing and painting. I have always had a particular fixation on portraiture. The digital prints featured in my graduate collection were produced from a range of watercolour portraits I produced prior to beginning my design process.
Simple silhouettes teamed with interesting textile design was the focus of my collection. I Combined hand marbled silks with textured applique and digitally printed linens and placed all of these elements within a predominantly white palette to create a collection evocative of an artist’s canvas.
For your final collection, what was your inspiration behind it ?
My favourite artist, Egon Schiele was the initial inspiration behind this collection. I have always loved his stylised portraits and clever employment of positive and negative space and wanted to create a collection that would both incorporate my own original illustrations and also subtly make allusion to the work of Egon Schiele
Most difficult thing you've had to learn since studying fashion design?
Most difficult thing I have had to learn is that it is essential to learn the technical side of fashion design (eg. Pattern making, garment construction) before you can make a design come to life.
Anyone you aspire or look up to in the design industry?
Akira Isogawa
Favourite part about being a designer?
Taking inspiration from different sources and arriving at something new and fresh.
