If you’re like me, and find yourself intrigued by the behind the scenes action of a designers life, then ACMI has you covered.
Their segment ‘Fashion on Film’ is amazingly enlightening. I reviewed three different documentaries about fashion and ended up walking away both inspired and amazed. I felt as though I personally got to know each designer.
HUBERT DE GIVENCHY: A LIFE IN HAUTE COUTURE
Hubert Givenchy is undoubtedly the god of elegance. His love of design started at an early age, and at the age of 17 the determined youth took a leap of faith and presented his sketch book to his idol – Mr. Balenciaga himself. At the time Balenciaga refused to see anyone, but little did either know that, aided by young Hubert’s drive to create his own fashion house, the two would be best of friends just a few years down the track. Hubert’s journey began with a mentorship under Jacques Faith in 1945, during which he learned the skills to progress in the industry. As a true artist of the Fashion world, Givenchy wanted to see change in the fashion world, and this was exactly what he created. He fashioned a new silhouette of elegance in fine, detailed pieces, while also creating relaxed, casual clothing; taking women from day to night wear. Givenchy dressed some of the best of the best, but one icon with which he was close was the incomparable Audrey Hepburn. He met this silver screen behemoth at the tender age of 19, and the two created a strong bond, working together until her death. This film entails so much more than just the life of one of fashion’s greats – it sheds a light on who he really was. I urge you to watch it and become totally inspired by his humble approach to fashion.
THE LEGACY OF ALEXANDER MCQUEEN
In celebration of one of fashion’s greatest designers, director Loïc Prigent delves into the extraordinary career of Alexander McQueen. Using his last four dramatic collections – Horn of Plenty, Plato’s Atlantis, The Bone Collector (menswear) and Angels and Demons – as a framework, Prigent crafts a stunning tribute to a designer who left us far too early. In a career spanning just over two decades, his legacy is being globally discovered through blockbuster exhibitions and now on film. Australian premiere, exclusive to ACMI.
