My fashion school experince.

Once upon a time, I was a fashion school student, it’ll be seven years since I had started my fashion journey.

Here i'm wearing a vintage blazer I found in retrostar. Also I was little bit more daring back then, that shirt is just a shirt I wore as a dress…. oh my.

I was only 17 when I first signed up for my diploma of fashion textile merchandising at Kangan. Funnily enough my dad was actually reading fashion journal (magazine) in the toilet when he saw the ad to study fashion at Kangan.
It was a new program they had recently launched, and I was one of 10 who signed up for it.

I had always loved fashion, designing and art. I’m a creative person, I was never good at maths or science. Having the opportunity to learn fashion four days a week, it was a dream come true.

Throughout  my year and half I learnt how to draw, I was taught for six months on how to pattern make. I would go to my shifts at safeway and boast about how I had to complete my pattern making project. I would lay it all out on  the tea table at work during my lunch break.  I was proud.

We were creating a wooden jacket here, it's still at Kangan today!

We learnt vital creative skills, and about every piece of fabric and blend! I also learnt marketing skills that kicked in at university in my first year, everything I’ve learnt at fashion school I’ve translated into my university course, just instead of industrial products, I simply think just fashion.

Cringe worthy drawings, they're much better now, these are the first original drawings of my outfits.

My fondest memory was being taught by Graham Long, he was the best, so experienced and we all loved listening to his wise words. I remember when the iPhone had just come to Australia, technology was just hitting a new step. I’d take photos of my trade drawings and upload them on my tafe blog, he was really impressed by how  tech savvy I was back then… look at me now!

I remember our lunch breaks, we’d eat and go shopping, sometimes I have to admit I’d just go shopping and wouldn’t return on a few occasions, but hey! What did you expect? We were fashion students! Plus wearing vintage clothing was all the rage, we only wore indie like fashion and listened to the likes of indie folk music.

I enjoyed my experience at kangan, I do wish I paid more attention to my Photoshop classes, but I guess when you aren’t too keen on a certain topic and when you’re younger, you are not willing to put the effort into learning something your not interested in.

So my advice? Put in all the effort, even if it’s a class you dislike, because I wish now I had learnt more in a class i could of used now. Also be in the right mindset in what you want to learn, achieve and experience at fashion school, because with this course a year and half goes so quickly.
If you put in the effort, you will achieve what you want!

Until next time foxes
